As mentioned previously, 95% of our domestic violence family moves have children involved and, sadly, they are “victims” as much as the moms. All of our volunteers are very sensitive to the trauma the families have endured so we try to make these events fun-filled, easy-going, stress-free keeping in mind we are strangers in their new home. With children we encourage them (with mom’s permission) to help move small items, make the beds, setup the tables, etc. Transformation starts immediately as they are “helping mom” and we’re hearing laughter pretty quickly and that’s powerful, symphonic music to the moms. This move had everything from utter joy of having real beds, a beautiful living rooms, art on the walls, rugs on the floor, child animated chairs, fully appointed kitchen just in time for the initial meal in their new home. the sign “Home-Sweet-Home” resonated with gleeful happiness and more than a few tears!
If you are looking for the “Love-What-You-Do / Do-What-You-Love” giving self activity, we move every Saturday starting at 8:30, finish by 11. We moved everything seen in the pictures in under an hour with 7 volunteers!
